Baby Update

Danny is now 1 month and 1 week old! He’s grown so much over the past few weeks, it’s just amazing. He now weighs 2 lbs. 15.9 oz. His feeds are up to 6.8 ml an hour (he’s still on continuous feeds through a feeding tube) and they’ve weened him down a dose on one of his stimulant medications. He’s still having some troubles with his lungs, but that’s something that is normal for a preemie his age. He’s getting stronger, but it just takes time. As my OB told me on my last visit: “Just feed him, water him, and watch him grow!” Here are a few recent pics:

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

Rating: B+

I’ve seen Sarah Addison Allen’s book Garden Spells reviewed a few times on other blogs and even glanced at it once in the supermarket, but thought “It’s not my thing, let’s just skip it”. Then I found myself away from home with nothing to read! I picked up a copy; hopeful of a good read, but wary of disappointment, because, I’ll be honest, I am far too critical when it comes to romances and chick lit usually makes me head for the hills. I was afraid this book might turn out to be a mixture of both, so I started it almost reluctantly.

I finished it in less than a day. Cover to cover. I had a great time reading it. I laughed a little and even cried once, just for a bit. It was a refreshing read, despite my early comparisons with the film Practical Magic (Gee, now I’m really in the mood to watch that again!). The story was well-paced, all of the characters were interesting, even the ones whom you don’t quite like (and even they had a few redeeming qualities in the end). I loved how everyone seemed to grow and change, even the secondary characters. The only thing that I didn’t like and when I read it, it took me out of the story for just a bit was this: on the bottom of page 243 (if you have the paperback version) something is mentioned that rather gives some of the story’s outcome away. For me, it took some of the suspense out of the last few chapters. I enjoyed everything else about the book and look forward to reading more by this author!

Welcome to the world, Danny-Boy!

I am still here, but there have been some major changes in my life that have kept me from updating this site. I found out I was pregnant not long after posting the Seafaring Challenge. I spent the next few months feeling very icky and tired, so my book reading took a back burner (unless it was pregnancy related). Just a few weeks ago, at 26 weeks pregnant, I was admitted to the hospital with severe preeclampsia and pulmonary edema. On May 8th at 4:54 p.m., my son Jonathan Daniel, was born via emergency c-section. He weighed 1 lb. 14 oz. He’s in the NICU and will remain there atleast until his due date, which was August 12. He is doing well, though he has a few mishaps now and then with his breathing and heart rate. He’s on medication and the c-pap to help him improve his breathing. He’s very tiny, but he’s a big fighter! Here are a few pics of him at a little over 2 weeks old.

The Seafaring Challenge is now open!

Thanks to everyone who has already signed up! Let’s see if we can get the word out a little more so others can join in the fun! As always, HAPPY READING!!!

The Coma by Alex Garland

Rating: B+

Alex Garland’s The Coma is the story of Carl, a man who wakes from a coma to find that his world has taken a strange turn. The lines between his conscious and subconscious mind begin to blur and overlap. Is he still in the coma? Did he ever really wake up?

The story is told in a very simple, sparse style and is very well-paced for such a short read (I read it through in about two hours). Some chapters are only a page or two long, but no words are wasted. As a whole, the book is disorienting and strange, but in a good way. Definitely a keeper!

Christina
